Rome [ENA] Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to the United States, concluded on 17 April 2025, and was marked by a cordial atmosphere and the strengthening of bilateral relations. Meloni was received at the White House by President Donald Trump. After a private lunch, the two leaders held a meeting in the Oval Office, during which they discussed a number of topics, including: trade, defense, energy, Ukraine .

Trump expressed support for a future trade deal between the United States and the European Union, calling it “a fair deal,” but stressed that there is “no rush” to do so.Meloni confirmed Italy’s commitment to increase military spending to 2 percent of GDP, in line with NATO goals and announced plans to increase imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States. The two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine. Trump expressed his desire to end the conflict, showing dissatisfaction with all parties involved, including Ukrainian President Zelensky. Although the visit did not result in any tangible agreements, it was seen as an opportunity to strengthen personal and institutional ties between the two countries.

Meloni invited Trump to visit Rome, an invitation that the American president accepted. According to a poll, 54% of Italians evaluated Meloni's visit to the United States positively, with predominant emotions of enthusiasm and joy. Meloni's visit to Washington consolidated relations between Italy and the United States, with promises of future collaboration in various areas. However, the lack of concrete agreements indicates that practical results will only emerge after further negotiations and meetings.
